8 and 9 Year Old Jimmy Fund Team Advances!

8/16/2010

The Spartans ignored the fact that vacations kept four of their players from participating in the first round of the Jimmy Fund League playoffs. The nine players that remained for the Stoneham Spartans put forth a stellar performance on a very hot and humid summer night at Lower Pomeworth field to oust a tough Wakefield opponent. The Spartans rode strong pitching performances from Eoin Dooley and Daniel Seaver to victory. The bats were on fire for the Spartans as every Spartan player reached base at least one time. Will O’Brien propelled the Stoneham offense with a bases clearing inside the park home run blast in the third inning to put 3 runs on the board. On the defensive side, Joe Connell came up with an amazing catch in deep centerfield in the fifth inning to keep Wakefield off the board. It was an unbelievable game that had several lead changes throughout the contest, but the Spartans team effort allowed them to hold on for the 9 – 7 victory. The other standout participants for the Stoneham Spartans team include Casey Russell, Dante Messina, Jack Craven, Mike Simonelli and Fred Russell.

In the semi-final round of the Jimmy Fund League playoffs, two Stoneham teams square off. The Spartans draw a tough matchup against the talented Stoneham Red Sox. The game will be played at Lower Pomeworth field in Stoneham on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 5:45PM. Don’t miss it, since one of these teams will be competing in the Championship game at Weafer field in Woburn on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 3:00 PM.
